PA 5301 Population Methods and Issues for the US and the Third World (CORE Course)
Instructor: Miriam King (3 cr.)
This course is designed to teach basic demographic methods. Students will be exposed to the methodology behind the population numbers cited in popular and scientific media and will learn how to use basic demographic techniques in research or policy analysis. The course is also designed to familiarize students with population trends in the United States and the world. Topics covered include: fertility, mortality, and the demographic transition; population growth and the environment; infant mortality; fertility inside and outside marriage; trends in family structure and living arrangements; HIV/AIDS; international migration; and population aging.
PA 5401 Poverty, Inequality, and Public Policy
Instructor: Maria Hanratty (3 cr.)
Nature/extent of poverty/inequality in the United States,
causes/consequences, impact of government programs/policies. Extent/causes of
poverty/inequality in other developed/developing countries.
PA 5451/PubH 6281 Immigrant Health Issues
Instructor: Robin Councilman (3–4 cr.)
This course focuses on how to access demographic, health, and background information on immigrant populations; characteristics and health needs of immigrants.; designing culturally competent health programs; and advocating for change to promote immigrant health.
PA 8312 Analysis of Discrimination
Instructor: Samuel L. Myers Jr. (3 cr.)
Introduces students of policy analysis and other applied
social sciences to tools for measuring and detecting discrimination in market
and nonmarket contexts. Application of modern tools of labor econometrics and
race relations research to specific problems of market and nonmarket
discrimination.

Roles of difference (race, gender, class) in shaping distribution of housing, particularly in cities. Role of housing in patterns of social differentiation
PubH 8805 Sociological Theory in Health Services Research
Instructor: Kathleen Theide Call (3 cr.)
Affect of social structure on health outcomes/behaviors. Current/historical events/issues from perspective of sociological/social psychological theories. Students apply theories to a topic they identify.
