MPC Data Training Workshops

The Minnesota Population Center offers several training opportunities for MPC members, staff, graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and the public.

MPC Data Training Workshops

In these hands-on workshops, local researchers will learn about the content of MPC's free data resources and receive basic information about how to get and use the data.

  • MPC Data Training Workshops at Wilson Library.  Learn to access free social science and health data. The databases covered include the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS-USA, IPUMS-International,  and IPUMS-CPS), the Integrated Health Interview Series (IHIS), the National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) and the North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP).
  • Geographic Information Systems: Analyzing Data and Creating Maps. This 7-hour workshop will introduce participants to using a geographic information system (GIS) to analyze data and create maps.  The Spring 2012 workshops will be held on January 27, February 24, March 30, and April 27.

Workshops at upcoming national conferences

MPC project staff regularly provide half-day workshops at national conferences such as the annual meetings of the Population Association of America, the American Sociological Association and the American Public Health Association.  Look here for registration information on upcoming MPC data workshops.

  • American History Assocation Annual Meeting. The Minnesota Population Center is giving a workshop on the Integreated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) and the North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP). This workshop will be help on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 3:00pm-5:00pm in the Chicago Ballroom IX of the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers.
  • Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting. The Minnesota Population Center is giving a workshop titled, “School Attendance Boundary Information System: Unlocking the Potential of this New Data Resource”. This workshop will be help on Monday, February 27, 2012 from 9:20am-12:40pm in the Grand Ballroom East of the Hilton New York in New York, NY.
