ABSTRACT: This paper applies spatial analysis techniques to changing patterns of settlement in United States urban areas for 1940 to 2000 and back further in time for those where data exist, especially for New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.  Specifically, I track the change in population density; assess the degree to which it is spatially auto-correlated; and, relate it to physical features, such as rivers, lakes and coastline, as well as man-made facilities such as new highway and other major facility development.  The tract-level data make it possible to look at the trajectory of change in these cities and to compare them based upon their differences and similarities.  The analysis will make it plain to what extent patterns laid down in one era are either reinforced or eroded in later eras.  This analysis will use newly available data and developing methods to consider urban development in a new way.

MPC Seminars are held in 50 Willey Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota Minneapolis Campus.
