ABSTRACT: The population census in Korea has been conducted since 1925 with the period of 5 years. The 17th census was conducted in November, 2005. The Census of Korea can be divided into 4 stages: 1925-1944, 1949-1955, 1960-1995 and 2000-, and each stage has its own characteristics and issues. The Korean National Statistical Office (KNSO) is responsible for the Population Census and the local government works for the field operation. The data collection method has changed from self-enumeration to an interview and internet survey methodology. Since 1966, sampling techniques have been introduced to reduce the time, cost and burden on respondents and enumerators. Thirteen items, such as name, relation to head of household, sex, age, marital status, educational attainment, etc. have been included in every census. The 2005 census had special modules on low fertility and aging issues. The KNSO has developed and provided Census Micro Data since 2006, and 1, 2, and 5% microdata samples are available through the web-site of Micro Data Service System (http://mdss.nso.go.kr) or the Statistics Shopping Mall. For the future, the KNSO is promoting the High Quality Census program through the improvements of accuracy and coverage, personal privacy protection, reduction of burden and cost, and specialized data services.
