Abstract: Many regional planning agencies provide long-range (20-30 years) socioeconomic forecasts for use in planning and growth management. These forecasts present a great deal of information about future development expectations and future regional geography, thereby setting the stage for planning.

Twin Cities Metropolitan Council has begun a renovation of its forecast practices. The Council’s goal is an integrated modeling of land development dynamics and transportation networks, built on valid regional science, and employing state-of-the-art methods. This presentation will cover Metropolitan Council’s experience. Attention to the “inside baseball” of forecasts is timely as the state-of-the-art is currently fast advancing. New, economics-based, integrated, transportation-land-use models have been implemented by a number of metropolitan planning organizations; some of these solutions are within the reach of medium-sized regions like the Twin Cities.
