ABSTRACT: The 1997 revision of the federal classification system for ethnic and racial statistics was hailed by advocates as an advance in capturing the racial and ethnic complexity of American society. However, this innovation also has increased the complexity of statistical studies of race and ethnicity in the United States. Some of these issues were anticipated, while others were unforeseen. The American Indian population offers several useful insights about these changes and their likely impact on other groups in the future.
MPC Seminars are held in 50 Willey Hall on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota Minneapolis Campus.
