IPUMS Workshop to be Held in July

The first IPUMS Summer Workshop will be held in Minneapolis from July 19 to 21. The workshop is a 3-day event designed to train social scientists to use the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series. The databases covered will include IPUMS-USA, IPUMS-International, IPUMS-CPS and the North Atlantic Population Project. Together, these databases cover 150 years of U.S. and international census data.

The agenda will consist of a combination of presentations and laboratory work. The course will cover the sample designs, database creation, data extract systems, as well as complex issues involved in using the data (such as weights, geographic variables, SES measurement, and the use of constructed variables). There will be several opportunities for participants to discuss individual research projects.

The main goals of the workshop are to facilitate participants’ use of IPUMS data, to expose participants to exemplary uses of the data, and to build community and connections between data users.

Those wishing to participate should have some familiarity with SAS, SPSS, or Stata. No experience with the IPUMS databases is necessary, though experienced users are welcome. Graduate students and recent Ph.D.s are particularly encouraged to attend.

Enrollment in the course is limited. Tuition is $250. A small number of tuition waivers and travel scholarships are available. Additional information and the registration form are available.
