Participants described the state of the census samples available from their country, highlighting potential issues for successful data harmonization. Several non-European countries also attended the meetings and began steps to share their data with the IPUMS-International project. A follow-up meeting with European statistical agency representatives is scheduled for June 2006 in Paris. This meeting will also include representatives from other regions, particularly Africa, in an effort to stimulate more global participation.

This ongoing partnership with CED will help the IPUMS-International team to coordinate activities with European partners and to develop new variables optimized for Europe. Albert Esteve and Anna Cabré, the center director, have received three European Union grants to further the work of the project in Europe. The CED will hold workshops, develop European-specific variables, and collect supplementary data and documents of specialized regional interest. The CED will also house a mirror site of the IPUMS system with a customized front-end emphasizing the European focus.

The IPUMS-International team met with representatives from 14 European statistical offices this July in Barcelona, Spain.
