Data Services Core

The Data Services Core provides data processing, coding, and cleaning services for MPC-based research projects, and provides a variety of demographic data services to external clients worldwide.

What we do

The data development and services core is responsible for data processing and cleaning of historical census microdata samples. The core also assists MPC affiliated researchers with data entry cost estimates for pilot projects and grant proposals and hires out data processing services.

Since 1976, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation have funded the creation of new historical microdata samples of every surviving census from 1850 to 1950.  In 1989 researchers at Minnesota began working to fill the gaps in the historical census series. Some of these projects are still ongoing; when they are complete, we will have samples of at least one percent for every U.S. population census of the past 150 years with the sole exception of the 1890 census, which was destroyed by fire.

Who we are

The core has a staff of 11 full-time associates and 16 research assistants under the leadership of Core Director, Ron Goeken.
